In May 2020, the main work began on the divergence of Basel–Muttenz, as a central prerequisite for the quarterly hour service of the urban railway service (S-Bahn) between Basel and Liestal.

The Basel-Muttenz divergence is the bypass for the busy main exit of Basel SBB station and is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025. Thanks to the new, single-track Donnerbaum Bridge, all S-Bahn trains in the direction of Liestal and Fricktal will in future bypass the main exit via Basel goods station and enter Muttenz without crossing the tracks of other trains.

TR Trans Rail AG is working on this railway extension project on behalf of BauRail AG. The shunting vehicle Tm 232 is on loan from Sersa for this project.
